PURPOSE:To reduce the influence of a position shift, noise, etc. and to raise discriminating performance by providing a means for converting a quantized pattern to an out-of-focus pattern, and calculating the similarity of a standard pattern stored in advance and the out-of-focus pattern. CONSTITUTION:A scanning pattern obtained by scanning a character printed on a business form, etc. is stored in a pattern memory 1, a quantized pattern is cut at every character by a cutting circuit 2, and it is added to an out-of- focusing circuit 3. The out-of-focus pattern processed by this circuit 3 is stored in an out-of-focus memory 4, and a standard pattern stored in advance in a dictionary memory 5 is provided to a similarity calculating circuit 6. By this calculating circuit 6, similarity of the out-of-focus pattern from the memory 4 and the standard pattern is calculated, its calculation result is provided to a deciding circuit 7, to decide a candidate character and it is stored in the memory 5 through a upper candidate memory 8 and a dictionary selecting circuit 9. Subsequently, the similarity of the out-of-focus pattern and the candidate character pattern is calculated again, the calculation result is decided, to reduce the influence of a position shift, noise, etc. and to raise the discriminating performance. |
