PURPOSE:To improve the precision and speed of a read by signifying the output of an optical character read sensor only when two sensors arranged on the upstream and downstream sides of the character read sensor detect the presence of a document. CONSTITUTION:The document 13 is irradiated by a light source 12 and characters are read through the sensor 11 by its reflected light and converted 40d photoelectrically to send an output signal Sd to a memory 46. Further, the document detection sensors 30b and 30a provided on the upstream and downstream sides along the flow of the document detect whether the document is present or not and their outputs are converted 40b and 40a photoelectrically to input signals Sb and Sa to an AND gate 44. When both sensors 30b and 30a detect the presence of the document, the gate 33 supplies an enable signal Sab to the memory 46 to signify the signal SD from the sensor 11. Consequently, the document is read accurately at a high speed regardless of the staining and damaging of the document. |
