Antimicrobial 5-bromo-5-nitro-1,3-dioxane. Title cpd. of formula : is prepd. by reacting 2-bromo-2-nitro-propane-1,3-diol with formaldehyde pref. in a ratio 1-1.01:1, in the pres. of an acid catalyst e.g. polyphosphoric acid (76-84% P2O5) at elevated temps. Antimicrobial agents may contain 0.05-5 (pref. 0.1-1) % of (I) as active ingredient.
