In a method of producing internal and external threads of relatively large diameter by means of a milling or grinding head, provision is made for the meshing of a thread, axially connected to the milling or grinding head, with a threaded extension of an axially fixed support device producing the circular movement to be used for driving the milling head in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the circular path, in the course of which the relative rotation between thread and threaded extension, derived from the circular movement of the milling head, takes place about the fixed axis of the thread to be produced. Serving to carry out this method is an apparatus which comprises a milling or grinding head (3) which can be guided in a circle relative to a workpiece (1) by means of a support device (14) and which is distinguished by a guide arbor (21) which can be secured in a fixed position in the thread axis (15) corresponding to the centre point of the guide circle, by a guide device for transmitting angle changes between milling head (3) and guide arbor (21), and by a thread on the support device (14), which thread meshes with a corresponding threaded extension (16) on the milling head (3) in such a way that they can be rotated relative to one another and with the height of the milling head (3) being adjusted, the milling head (3) being axially fixed and radially rotatable relative to the threaded extension (16).
