A non-surgical method of contraception is described which provided for the insertion of an expansible plug (12) through the female reproductive tract into the oviduct. When so positioned, the plug (12) is expanded into sealing contact with the oviduct wall. In turn, the plug can be subsequently collapsed and withdrawn when the contraceptive effect is no longer desired. For carrying out the method, a positioning device (32) is releasably connected to the plug (12) to facilitate its insertion and positioning and cooperating means (24) (26) (30) (34) (40) (42), electrical or mechanical, in the plug (12) and positioning device (32) enable control of plug expansion and/or collapse from the exterior of the female body by the attending physician.
