In a steam steriliser, in particular for dental equipment to be sterilised, such as hand instruments, the equipment to be sterilised is arranged in a sealable container in the steam of a heated liquid. To prevent an excess pressure and to avoid a compression closure of the container, the boiling point of the liquid at the pressure of the ambient atmosphere is above the sterilisation temperature, and the pressure in the container (1) is maintained at the pressure of the ambient atmosphere.
