In a device for the contactless marking of a wheel by means of colour application, a marking head (13) is provided which can be controlled as a function of an unbalanced measuring device and an analysing device and has a delivery device (17) with a discharge opening (21) for the colour. The delivery device (17) has a receiving space (19), the size of which corresponds to the quantity of colouring agent required for the marking, and a delivery member (22), which can be actuated suddenly, for expelling this quantity of colouring agent. In this way, a drop of colouring agent is thrown onto the wheel at such a high velocity that accurate marking is effected despite a high rotational speed. A method of operating this device provides for the colour to have a high viscosity of at least 10 Pa.s.
