In a poppet valve 10 which includes a poppet 11 having an annular seat 12, the poppet is provided with a transfer passage 22 from the inlet 21 to a pressure space 20, and a through bore 15 extending from the pressure space 20 to a discharge space 14 and closable by a pilot valve 24, the through bore 15 being extended so that even when the valve is in open position the end 35 of the bore 15 is within the discharge space 14 downstream of the seat 12.
