A device for checking the apparent density of a detonating cord filled with explosive comprises an unwinding and winding drum for the cord, tensioning rolls and a radioactive source with a sensor for checking the apparent density of the cord. A device for marking the cord responds depending on the sensor which is formed by an ionisation chamber and which is activated by the radioactive source if the apparent density is not as desired and thereby marks the cord over the defective cord length or over the cord length not having the desired apparent density. According to a preferred embodiment, an acoustic signalling unit and a recording unit for defective cord lengths are provided. According a further embodiment, a device serves for checking or monitoring the cord markings, a device for interrupting the operation being provided if the defective cord length exceeds a predetermined length.
