In a process for thermal cracking of heavy liq. hydrocarbons, the preheated feedstock is fed to the base of a vertical pressurised reactor, in which the process stream is given a rotary tangential motion as it rises. The tangential rotary motion of the process steam can be produced by: (i) fitting a helical insert to the reactor over its whole length or a part thereof; or (ii) feeding the feedstock to the reactor through nozzles, fitted either to the inlet section of the reactor, tangentially, or as extensions, perpendicular to the radial direction, to a riser feed pipe. Back-mixing is reduced without the fitting of perforated plates which interfere with reactor cleaning. Secondary reactions producing pitch, coke and asphaltenes are therefore reduced.
