The rack and pinion steering mechanism has a box with a rotating pinion(3) inside it, connected to a steering wheel There is alos a rack(10) supported in the box to slide axially in mesh with the pinion. The rack teeth(2) follow a variable pitch form. The pitch of the teeth varies the axial displacement of the rack when the pinion turns. The pitch line goes around the rack following its axis in the neutral position of the steering wheel in positions of small angles of rotation. Further away, it follows a helicoidal line following a straight line at constant angle.
