In an apparatus for testing continuously supplied cigarettes, air is blown to impinge against one end of each cigarette in succession and both that portion of the impinging air stream that passes right through the full length of the cigarette, and part of that portion of the impinging air stream that is deflected from the said one end of the cigarette, are measured, and detected variations from normal measurement values caused by a faulty wrapper or faulty end filling of the cigarette are used to actuate means to reject a faulty cigarette. Cigarettes Z are transported on a test drum 1 in grooved supports 6, 7 to which they are held by suction applied through ducts 8, 9 via a control slot 39. Each pair of supports 6, 7 is associated with a bore 24 formed in a flange 4, and a blower nozzle 27 housed in a flange 5, of the drum 1. By means of control slots in stationary control rings 32, 47, as the drum 1 rotates, compressed air is directed against the end of a cigarette Z and the suction supply to the ducts 8, 9 is briefly interrupted so that the cigarette Z is pushed against a bore 24 and, on further rotation of the drum 1, pipes 36, 49 are connected to a chamber 29 surrounding the nozzle 27 concerned, and to the bore 24 concerned, respectively, over an arc of rotation equal to the angular separation of the cigarettes Z. The pipes 36, 49 connect to pneumatic Shmitt triggers 53, 52 the outputs of each of which are fed to a pneumatic OR-member which in turn leads to a pneumatic bistable device 55. Detected air pressures greater than a desired value in the chamber 29, or less than a desired value in the bore 24, actuate the appropriate Shmitt trigger 53 or 52 resulting in a pulse of compressed air being emitted by the device 55 and fed via a pipe 43, a control slot 42 anda duct 22 to ejector nozzles 13, 14 to eject a faulty cigarette while it is still travelling through the test region. The triggers 52, 53 are pre-set to the desired pressure values by means of valves 58, 59. |
