The open fireplace insert is arranged in the grate of an open fireplace and is used to exploit the heat of the fire and the smoke gases. Hollow fire guiding combs (4) are arranged on an upper section (3), which is inclined forwards, of the insert. The said combs have lateral heat exchange surfaces, which form flow channels for the fire and the smoke gases. The smoke gases are only slightly deflected by the flow channels before they ascend into the chimney. They pass over the entire surface of the fire guiding combs, resulting in a high level of efficiency of heat exchange. <IMAGE>
