The connector (1) has an attached cover cap (5), which is removed to allow the connector (1) to be screwed together with an identical connector to provide a releasable optical coupling. The connector (1) incorporates at least two optical fibre ends which are protected against the ingress of dirt via a cover plate (24). The cover plate (24) is attached to an axially sliding piston element within the connector housing (2), the movement of which is blocked by a rotary disc released by the opposing rotations of the two connectors (1) as these are screwed together, to allow the fibre ends to be brought through respective openings in the cover plate (24) into the coupling position.
