For igniting and burning off spilled crude oil on water surfaces or soil, an incendiary composition is used which contains an acetylene gas former and, as initiator, an alkali metal in spherical form. The total surface area of the gas former and initiator is to be kept as small as possible, and the grain form or spherical form of the two components is to be kept as large as possible. As a fire-activating additive which can float on the water, an oxygen donor coated to pumice is used. To prevent the formation of a hydrophobic film, a wetting agent is also used. To assist the floating ability of the incendiary composition, an alkali metal salt of cellulose-glycolic acid is used.
