A device is proposed, which serves for the illumination of passive displays with a light source disposed separately therefrom. The device consists essentially of a plate (12), which is disposed in front of the display (10) and which is designed, in terms of its thickness, in the form of a wedge and into which the light of a light source (13) enters via a light guide (15) from the thicker end of the plate (12) at the end face (12a), is reflected at the front surface (12b) of the plate (12), which front surface is inclined out from the plane situated perpendicular to the direction of view (X), and emerges at that surface (12c) of the plate (12) which is situated at a small distance (a) from the display. This device gives an illumination of the display at a steep angle with a small overall depth, as well as a high efficiency of illumination. The device can be used both for incorporation in the dashboard of motor vehicles and the like, and also for indicating instruments in open or closed spaces which have a differing, varying or inadequate brightness (Figure 1). <IMAGE>
