<p>A stratified composite paper product (8) which is substantially impermeable to liquids & gases comprises: an interior stratum (2) composed predominantly of cellulosic papermaking fibers (3), directly contiguous to each face of the interior stratum (2), an intermediate stratum (4) containing intermingled thermoplastic resin fibers (5) and cellulosic papermaking fibers (3), and directly contiguous to each intermediate zone (4), a strongly adhering, continuous outer layer (9) of a thermoplastic resin. This paper product is particularly useful as a paper base for both image-recording elements and image-receiving photographic elements. It is advantageously prepared by a method involving simultaneously flowing slurries of cellulosic (100) and thermoplastic resin fibers (101) into a web-forming zone (106) to form a composite web (108) having outer strata of thermoplastic resin fibers (5). After drying, the composite web (108) is subjected to heat and/or pressure sufficient to fuse the outer strata into continuous thermoplastic resin layers (9). </p> |
