A sheet feeding device has a drawing-off roller for feeding a sheet using the friction which is generated between the sheet and the drawing-off roller which rests under a certain amount of pressure on the sheet, a feeding roller for feeding the sheet and a separating roller which exerts pressure on the feeding roller at a contact point. The separating roller is driven in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the feeding roller, but it rotates in the same direction as the feeding roller, and together with it, once a load exerted on the separating roller has exceeded a predetermined value, so that the feeding of two sheets, with one covering the other, can be avoided. The pressure exerted by the pressing roller on the sheet is increased by a pressure exerting device when a sheet feeding action is started, and the pressure exerted on the drawing-off roller by the pressure exerting device is removed once the front end of the sheet has at least been taken over between the feeding and the separating roller.
