A data carrier with a carrier body which can be coded by means of information bits. The aim is easy codeability and an evaluation of the coded information which takes place with high spacing tolerance. This is achieved by constructing the carrier body (1) with a row of recesses (2) in which armatures (3) are movably supported. Each of these assumes one of two possible end positions (3a, 3b) as a function of an information bit, reflecting coatings (11, 12) becoming visible in windows (6, 7) of the carrier body (1) in each case when the armatures (3) are in particular end positions. The armature is adjusted magnetically and the information is read out by means of light scanners (28, 29) or visually. The field of application comprises transport control systems. <IMAGE>
