Process for the preparation of diorganodihalosilanes

A process for the preparation of diorganodihalosilanes from silicon and an organohalide is described, in which the two reactants are brought into contact with one another in the presence of a partially oxidised copper catalyst, the catalyst having a surface area of at least 3.5 m<2>/g and particles 100% of which are smaller than 35 mu m and 100% of which are greater than 0.7 mu m.
