To control mites which parasitise bees, especially varroa mites, an open reservoir of formic acid is placed in the hive of the infested bee colony and vaporised by heating the vicinity of the formic acid reservoir. The vaporisation of formic acid is continued until all the mites parasitising the bees in the colony and the brood which is developing where appropriate have been killed. The apparatus for carrying out the method has a heating plate (18) whose heating effect can be controlled and which is located in the hive (10) of the colony. <IMAGE>
