The expansion compensating element for the surround of a flat-roof covering serves to take up expansions and contractions to which the sheet metal covering of the surround or parapet are exposed. The element is of simpler construction than elements of this type already known. It comprises merely two mutually overlapping sheet metal strips (10, 11) which are joined to one another by a moulded-on strip (30) made of rubber-elastic material. However, this strip is moulded on only next to the overlapping region (12) at (31, 32) on the metal sheets (10, 11) and does not adhere in the overlapping region. <IMAGE>
