In saw-tooth grinding machines, it was known to move the face-grinding side of only one grinding wheel up to the face and the back of a tooth by swivelling the wheelhead through large angles and then to finish-grind first of all the faces and then the backs of all teeth. It was also known to face-grind the face and back of a tooth one after the other, that is, to finish-grind each tooth, and in fact with machines either with two wheelheads or with two wheels arranged on the same axis on a common support. So that each tooth can be finish-ground with less effort, the tooth back is now ground with the periphery of the same grinding wheel when surface grinding the tooth face. To grind carbide inserts of the teeth, a diamond coating can be embedded on the wheel in such a way that sometimes its surface on the flat side of the wheel is working and sometimes its surface on the periphery of the wheel is working. The wheelhead need only be slightly adjustable in an angular manner in accordance with the inclination of the tooth back; it can be moved by compound-slide guideways in three axial directions spatially intersecting at right angles by means of hydraulic drives or electric servomotors which can be operated from a control panel. In addition, the wheel with its motor can be pivotable inside the wheelhead about an axis parallel to the wheelhead guide. <IMAGE>
