The novel bicyclic ketene O,N-acetals are prepared by heating carbonic esters of N-2-hydroxyethyl lactams in the presence of catalytic amounts of alkaline compounds of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals, followed by distillation of the reaction mixture. The bicyclic ketene O,N-acetals serve as starting compounds for the preparation of active compounds in the area of plant protection and pharmaceuticals and as chain extender and crosslinking agent in polyurethane production.
