Arranged within an oil sump (10) is a cup (16) which is connected via a pipe (14) to an oil pump (12). Arranged in the pipe (14) is a thermostat (26) which acts on a bell-shaped valve (24) which, depending on the oil temperature, opens the space within the cup (16) or the space outside the cup (16) and the corresponding quantities of oil for suction by the oil pump (12). An oil-catching plate (34) arranged above the cup directs the dripping oil always into the cup (16), from which it can overflow into the space outside the cup. When the engine is cold, the lower base (22) of the bell-shaped valve (24) closes the bottom opening (20), with the result that the oil is supplied within a small circuit to the lubrication points. When this small quantity of oil reaches a certain temperature, the thermostat is activated, the bell-shaped valve (24) thus being displaced downwards in order to connect the pipe (14) to the large quantity of oil. <IMAGE>
