The invention relates to a battery-powered metal detector (10) whose housing (12) has a locating surface (18) on a detector head (16). Facing said locating surface - preferably parallel thereto - is an end face (22) of a ferrite rod (20). Said rod carries a winding (24) which is located in the resonant circuit (50) of an oscillator (48) arranged on a printed circuit board (26). The output voltage of said oscillator can be adjusted to a reference voltage by means of an actuator (34) and a comparative display (36). The comparative display can have a pointer instrument, or else a light-emitting diode, a liquid-crystal display or rows, or chains of such elements, in particular in a bridge circuit downstream of the oscillator (48). A light-emitting diode (44), which can also be used as a status display, can stabilise the reference voltage. Electronic compensation can be switched on by actuating a pushbutton. An electrode conductor track (40) is arranged on the printed circuit board (26) parallel to the one end face (22) of a ferrite rod in order to detect live metal parts in a capacitive fashion, and is signalled separately by a LED display (64). <IMAGE>
