In the case of a trunk piston (1) of light alloy for internal combustion engines on which material areas of varying ductility lie adjacent to one another in the surface of the piston head, the areas of the less ductile material (6) are slightly set back compared to the adjacent areas of more ductile material. As a result, unintended but not always avoidable impacts (4) of the valve tappets as far as possible strike the more ductile material, thereby preventing the material chipping which easily occurs in the less ductile material areas when subjected to impact stressing of this type. <IMAGE>
