For every propeller (16), two slow-speed two-stroke diesel engines (11, 12) are provided in the hull (18) one behind the other in their longitudinal direction and parallel to the longitudinal axis (10) of the ship. For the direct drive of the propeller (16), the two-stroke diesel engines (11, 12) are connected to the propeller via a common shaft line (21). An engageable and disengageable coupling (13) is arranged in the shaft line (21) between the engines (11, 12). Due to the direct drive, transmission losses between engines and propeller do not occur, and the operating costs of the ship are low on account of the low specific fuel consumption of slow-speed two-stroke diesel engines. <IMAGE>
