摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain a color display device having high speed responsiveness free from uneven coloring by sandwiching a liquid crystal layer consisting of a multichromatic ferrodielectric liquid crystal with a pair of substrates having the color polarizer function provided with such voltage application means enabling the application of voltage on the liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal consisting of P-decyloxybenzylidene-P'-amino-2- methylbutyl cinnamate which is a Schiff type smectic liquid crystal as a host and a dye of a blue color as a quest is used for a liquid crystal layer 1. A transparent electrode 3 and an orientation control film 4 are formed on the inside of a substrate 2. A film 4 consists of PIQ. A polarizer 8 is attached on the outside of the substrate 2 on the observer's side. When an electric field E is applied to the layer 1, liquid crystal molecules 10 and dye molecules 11 are arranged to a state A or B according to the direction of the electric field. When the polarization direction 81 of the polarizer is made to coincide with the long axis direction of the molecules, the intensity of transmission changes between the states A and B. The display at a wide visual angle free from uneven coloring is made possible.
