A wire coil (13) is spirally wound in layers in a package container (10) having a plurality of straight sides contacting the periphery of the coil. Upon completion of the winding of the coil, the layers of the coil are secured together by tie members (15) in a multiplicity of positions around the coil. The wire (12) fed to the container (10) has a cast larger than the outside diameter of the coil formed therefrom.
