PURPOSE:To obtain diamond having a shape suited as a tool and the surface condition that permits adhesion to a tool support at high strength in a producing method using solvent metal by limiting the diameter of the solvent metal. CONSTITUTION:This diamond has irregular sectional shapes such as circular, polygonal, pentagram and other shapes, and has the >=1.5 times length for the diameter of these sectional areas. It is a rod-like single crystal of which the longitudinal direction is in the <111> or <100> or <110> direction and of which the surface has ruggedness 10 like a ground glass. In the case of synthesizing a piece of the single crystal of such diamond having, for example, a circular cylindrical shape, solvent metal 8 is worked to a shape having a circular cylindrical leg, and the diameter thereof is limited to the size smaller than the size of the diamond to be grown. Such metal is laminated with a carbon supply source 3 and seed crystal diamond 1 as shown in the figure, and the top and bottom end parts of the metal 8 are heated to high and low temps. under ultra-high pressure and high temp. to deposit carbon as diamond on the seed crystal by utilizing the difference of solubility of the carbon in the metal 8. |
