Polycyclic aromatic compounds present in reaction products obtained by the thermal hydrogenation of hydrocarbon liquids such as crude oils, may be catalytically hydrogenated under mild temperature conditions and high hydrogen partial pressures to produce saturated species but without ring fission. The saturated species may then be thermally hydrogenated to produce monocyclic aromatics and aliphatic fuel components such as ethane and methane. The process may be employed as a modification of the process described in UK Patent Application Publication No. 2062000 wherein a subsidiary thermal hydrogenation reaction is replaced with a catalytic hydrogenation stage.
