PURPOSE:To prevent abrupt decrease in reproduction output by using a main magnetic pole, by varying the thickness of the main magnetic pole stepwise in a track-width direction. CONSTITUTION:The main magnetic pole 11 is varied in thickness stepwise in the width direction W of a track (to t1 and t) in its transverse section. Each thickness of the main magnetic pole 11 is set preferably within a specific numeral range. Namely, t1 is 0.7-0.1thetam and (t) is 3-0.3thetam. Further, the thickness t1 and lengths of t1 and (t) are set preferably about a half track width W. A conventional head has an abrupt decrease in reproduction output when bit density is almost 50 KBPI, but vertical magnetic recording and reproduction with recording density characteristics continuous up to about 200 KBPI are performed while a necessary S/N level is maintained. |
