PURPOSE:To discriminate between the chattering and the actual breakage of a tool, by setting previously an envelope connecting peak values of vibrations involved in the damage to a standard tool, and comparing this envelope with the peak value of the actual vibrations obtained by a vibration detector. CONSTITUTION:In an electric circuit system diagram of a tool damage detecting apparatus, for example, the vibration detector 1 consisting of a piezo-electric element, etc. is attached near a tool whose damage should be detected, a low- pass filter 3 is connected to its output via an amplifier 2, and its output is connected to the input side of a monostable multivibrator circuit 5 and a peak value detecting circuit 4. This detector can discriminate between abnormal vibrations and normal vibrations by the circuit 5, and also can discriminate between abnormal vibrations due to chattering in the thus detected abnormal vibrations and abnormal vibrations due to the damage to the tool with respect to the difference of the wave patterns, so that highly precise detection of the damage to a tool can become possible. |
