In order to utilize the heat content in flue gases from furnaces with a high efficiency in a heating plant, the flue gases are cooled by heat exchanging down to a temperature near or below the dew point for certain corrosive agents present in the flue gas. This cooled gas is discharged through an inner flue gas pipe in a chimney, and through a slit-shaped channel 25 surrounding the inner pipe air or gas is carried having so high a temperature that deposition of condensate on the inner side of the flue gas pipe is prevented.
