A wire 1 is driven discontinuously by interposition between the edges of two rollers (pulleys) 11 and 12 rotating at equal velocities but in opposite direction, these rollers (pulleys) being adapted for providing between their edges a variable space, sometimes a minimum, sometimes a maximum, so as to apply to the wire, respectively, a frictional driving force which is sometimes positive and sometimes zero. Application to the feed for wire-converting machines, for example for the manufacture of springs. <IMAGE>
