The mowing or harvesting machine has a material intake with a chopping mechanism, to which a transverse conveyor passage is connected, inside which the material is shredded further. The material then passes via a discharge pipe into a trailer or a vehicle travelling alongside. The passage (9) has a peripheral discharge port (12) and one or more inlet ports through which the material is delivered into it via a shaft. A shredding device and one to discharge the material through the port are mounted in the passage immediately adjacent to each other. Shredding can be effected by bars (16) mounted on a central driven shaft (15) in the passage, working against inclined friction and guide bars (17) in the latter.
