In a screw conveyor for feeding free-flowing material to apparatuses under pressure or for discharging such material from such apparatuses, the lead-through arrangements provided on the screw housing for the screw shaft are also sealed reliably against high internal pressures by the measures which follow. At least one housing end is provided with an adjacent pressure chamber (13, 14) through which the screw shaft (1) is led. On its housing side, the pressure chamber is sealed in relation to the screw shaft by a stuffing box (11, 12) located in the end wall (4, 5) between the housing (3) and the pressure chamber, and on its opposite side by a sliding ring seal (26). A feedpipe (42, 43) for a pressurised gas leads into the pressure chamber, the latter being so configured that the operating pressure can exceed the internal pressure of the apparatus. <IMAGE>
