Silica-filled pneumatic tyres

Pneumatic tyres contain a vulcanised rubber mixture, which includes a finely-divided silica reinforcing pigment and a coupling agent of formula: A-R-B, in which A is a functional group able to react with the silica pigment; B is a functional group able to react to link itself to the rubber polymer; and R is a functional group linking A and B. 'A' forms a bond to the silica pigment by a silicon atom; 'B' forms a bond to the rubber by a S atom; R is, pref., a group derived from a hydrocarbon with 1-10C atoms. Typical proportions are 100 pts. of rubber, 40-90 pts. of silica pigment, and 0.1-15 pts. of coupling agent.
