In a process for surface-hardening of workpieces and equipment for carrying out the process, the workpiece surface to be hardened is first heated to the hardening temperature and then cooled to a temperature below the martensite point by means of a quenching agent of relatively weak action. To produce a hardening result which is as free of cracks as possible, and the most uniform state of strain possible after hardening, and thus to minimise the delay in hardening, the workpiece is treated, once it is below the martensite point, with a coolant acting more vigorously than the quenching agent, to adjust the temperature distribution of the initial state.
