A rack aisle 2 is provided with a rail 3 along which a storage and retrieval unit can be moved between two racks. There are arranged in the rack aisle 2 on either side of the rail 3, and in front of the racks, roller conveyors 4 for the supply and dispatch of stock carriers. The rack consists of a fixed-tray conveyor 14 which has long chain links 15 between the hinge points 16. The chain 15 runs round star-type deflectors 19 whose right-side deflection axle 24 is connected to a drive and adjoins the storage and retrieval unit at the rack aisle 2 to allow transfer of the box-shaped stock carriers 12. The lift mast 6 of the storage and retrieval unit has a turret 8 for a lifting platform with a guiding support 9 for a load carrier which can be moved therein towards the rack. This load carrier has a carrying and supporting end for transporting the stock carrier 12 from the roller conveyor 4 to the required level of the fixed-tray conveyor 14. (cf. Fig. 2)
