The apparatus is intended for use in conjunction with a handpiece having a double cannula which can be introduced into the anterior chamber of an eye undergoing surgery. The apparatus is provided with a source of rinsing fluid, which source is in communication with a lumen of the double cannula of the handpiece and in addition with a pump, which has a circulating rotary piston and is connected to the other lumen of the double cannula. Arranged between the pump and a tube line connecting the latter to the one lumen of the double cannula is a device which limits the suction action of the pump to a predetermined, adjustable pressure level. A limit switch can be provided which cooperates with this device and which stops the pump if a low pressure occurs which goes beyond the set vacuum.
