The invention relates in particular to measures for making the pressure and the temperature in the external firebox of a combustion chamber, fed by a compressor set, between compressors and expanders so high and at the same time keeping the whole engine or the combustion installation operationally reliable, that solid fuel also, for example in rod form, can be burnt in the high temperature at a given advance speed of the fuel rod. The temperature can be brought so high that the fuel rod being inserted ignites and burns itself. Gas which is too hot after combustion can be cooled economically by water injection and used for work power output. In the implementation of the invention, it emerged that such engines with external fireboxes, as a result of good compressors, valves and the combustion chamber design, can also work as petrol engines with degrees of efficiency which are not inferior to those of existing Otto engines. Fuel powder can also be burnt and the parts, which serve for perfecting the engine, can find further applications in hydraulics and pneumatics, as well as in aeroplane construction and vertical take-off of aerofoil aeroplanes. As the expanders in such engines produce work on every downward stroke, the engines are particularly compact or they produce increased power for their weight and dimensions.
