A process for continuously heating up a thermoforming thermoplastic sheet with cyclical advancement of the sheet within a thermoforming and filling machine, according to which a heat input takes place over a displacement section, the length of which is equal to the sum of several cycle displacements. The technical problem of the invention is that of heating up the thermoforming thermoplastic sheet during the starting period in such a way that no loss of sheet or cup packages occurs. During starting, first of all heat input takes place without cyclical advancement during a preheating period lasting several cycle periods. After switching on the cyclical advancement, the heat input is interrupted during an intermediate cooling period for the duration of one or a few cycle periods. Subsequently, continuous heat input takes place in the usual way during fixed-cycle operation.
