Water is degassed in a gas/water stripping system using a recirculating inert gas, which is regenerated and purified in the gaseous state. The water may be sea water which is to be used as injection water in underground oil reservoirs to obtain a higher degree of hydrocarbon recovery. Gas-liquid contact may be in a scrubbing tower 2, or in a gas-lift pump. Water enters via pipe 3, and degassed water exits at 12. Stripped gas, including oxygen, leaves via 6, and make-up air enters via 11, and is mixed with hydrogen fed from electrolyser 7 by pipe 8. The gas mixture is catalytically reacted in 10 to remove oxygen (the undesirable gas) to form a mixture of nitrogen (the inert stripping gas) and water, which is recirculated via pipe 5 to the stripper. <IMAGE> |
