摘要 PURPOSE:To produce easily a base material for an optical fiber for retaining the plane of polarization simply by the deposition of fine particles of glass by moving a burner around a quartz tube in synchronization with the rotation of said tube and moving the burner back and forth along the longitudinal direction thereof. CONSTITUTION:A quartz tube 10 consisting of SiO2 is held approximately horizontally, and is rotated circumferentially at a specified speed. A burner 11 is moved back and forth around the tube 10 to heat the tube. The burner 11 is moved back and forth within a 90 deg. rotating angle along the circumference of the tube 10 with the 1/2 rotation of the tube 10 as one cycle. At the same time, the burner 11 is moved back and forth at a specified speed along the longitudinal direction of the tube 10 as well. O2 and SiCl4, etc. are introduced into the tube 10 and fine particles of glass consisting essentially of SiO2 are formed by chemimical reaction and are deposited on the inside circumferential wall of the tube 10. The fine particles of glass are deposited over the entire length of the tube 10 then the rotation of the tube 10 is stopped, the burner is rotated 90 deg. circumferentially and the same procedure is repeated.
