PURPOSE:To reduce the elongation of a core, to prevent a water run, and to extend the life of an optical fiber unit by sheathing plural optical fiber cores which are stranded around a center wire together with a gel material with a pipe. CONSTITUTION:The optical fiber unit 10 consists of the center wire 12 which is a high tensile wire such as a stainless steel stranded wire and optical fiber cores 14 formed by sheathing wire elements 22 each having a silicone rubber coating 20 around an optical fiber 18 with a pipe 26 together with the gel material 24 like silicone gel, and the optical fiber cores 14 are stranded around the center wire 12 and filled with a unit filling material 16 to have a nearly circular section. The pipe 26 of the optical fiber cores 14 and the unit filling material 16 are formed of chemically the same or the same system materials. Therefore, when the optical fiber unit 10 is tensed, wire elements 22 move radially inward in the geall material to relieve the elongation. |
