N-Substituted amides having a blocking action on histamine H2 receptors, of formula: <IMAGE> in which X is a nitrogen atom or a CH group; Am represents a mono- or disubstituted amino group, a pyrrolidino, morpholino, thiomorpholino or hexamethylenimino group or an optionally substituted piperidino or piperazino group; A is CO or SO2 and B is an alkyl group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a phenyl group, a pyridyl group or a pyridyl 1-oxide group. Compositions containing these compounds and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts are useful in the treatment of ulcer disease.
