The present invention provides a length of material for the manufacture of an insulating window covering in which a support layer is provided, at least on one side, with an infrared-reflecting opaque specular layer of metal, an infra-red transmitting protective layer of plastics being deposited thereon, colour, being present in the protective layer in a concentration such that the specular layer is not visible, and the infra-red transparency is substantially maintained and the protective layer is thin to have a minimal thermal absorption. The present invention thus provides a length of material for the manufacture of insulating shades, blinds or similar window coverings for which the functional symmetry is achieved and which may be provided with coloured surface structures selected in esthetic manner without thereby losing the insulation..
