1,220,246. Chlorine-containing acrylic polymers and solutions thereof. KONISHIROKU PHOTO INDUSTRY CO. Ltd. 13 Sept., 1968 [19 Sept., 1967], No. 43765/68. Heading C3P. [Also in Divisions B1-B2 and G2] Subbing layers for photographic materials comprise a polymer of a chlorine-containing monomer of the formula where R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or chlorine, or a methyl radical and R<SP>2</SP> is a chlorinated alkyl radical or, where R<SP>1</SP> represents a chlorine atom, a methyl or ethyl radical, or a copolymer of such a monomer with another ethylenic monomer. Numerous suitable chlorine-containing monomers and comonomers are specified. Chloromethyl methacrylate is polymerized using azo-bis-isobutyronitrile as catalyst in dioxane, #-chloroethyl methacrylate is polymerized by emulsion polymerization using ammonium persulphate, sodium metasulphite and sodium lauryl-sulphate, methyl α-chloroalkylate is copolymerized with itaconic acid using azo-bis-isobutyronitrile as catalyst in acetone, and a terpolymer of chloromethyl methacrylate with methyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid is obtained using benzoyl peroxide in solution in dioxane. In examples, the polymer products are dissolved in organic solvents, viz. a mixture of (a) phenol or o-chlorophenol and (b) ethylene chloride or acetone, for photographic application; a copolymer of tetrachloroethyl methacrylate and acrylic acid is also used. |
